Assignment Name: Inking Assignment 2 Musican and Instrument
Due Date:
Objective: To gain a solid understanding of different techniques of inking and image building through re-creation and replication of patterns and styles
Materials: Inking materials, pen nibs and ink, #3 brush, toothbrush, white gouache, wooden sticks, anything to experiment making marks with in ink.
One piece of black mounting board 15 x 19”
Size: Six 6w x 7h” rectangular pieces of bristol with a half inch border creating a 5w x 6h” image area for drawing. Tape edges for clean edges. After drawings are complete. Mount drawings on black mounting board to make a 14” x 18” grid of images.
Process:
- Find a photograph of a famous musician from any era and either their instrument or an object that represents their music. Create an interesting composition. The finished piece should be a waist up portrait of the artist holding or interacting with that object( You might have to get multiple references from different people/images or take photos to complete your composition.
- Recreate or transfer your pencil drawing of your composition onto all six boards.
- Ink each 5 x 6 inch image. Each will be completed in different inking materials with different techniques. The techniques will be:
1. Hatching(crosshatch),
2. brush ink line and flat areas of black,
3. Wash
4. nib line and hash marks,
5. Mix Brush and nib( use white gouache?
6. Any and all materials experimental piece!Be inventive! Spatter, unconventional tools etc
***Pay close attention to controlling values in your images. You do NOT have to cover every inch of the piece with ink...remember white space can be a powerful part of an image. Also, create your image to be something you will like to recreate 6 times. ****
Grading: You will be graded on your ability to follow the assignment, quality of presentation, neatness and inventiveness of techniques.

nib and hash marks with big brush for background- Joe Chiardello Jean Giraud aka "Moebius" nib hatching, hash marks and lines
Nib hatch and crosshatch- Bernie Wrightson
Brush and ink- Becky Cloonan
Yuko Shimizu- Brush, nib and wash
Bill Sienkewicz….anything he needs to get it done.
