ILL 254 Assignment # 1B
Ink value grids!
Objective: create three value grids to help understand how to use ink materials to create different values and line effects.
Before starting, play around on a sheet of paper to get accustomed to the different nibs and see if any work better for you than others.
Process. Take 3 sheets of 9 x 12 bristol paper. Create an 8”x 8” square on the paper. Divide the squares into 16 2’x 2” equal squares. Tape down the edges of the paper around the 8 x8 squares.
Along the top of the squares from left to right, write a percentage above each of the four columns. 85 %, 50 %, 25% and 10%.
Down the side of the square write a material name for each row. The categories will be:
Square #1 nibs
Line, hatch, crosshatch, squiggles
Square #2 brush
Wash( ink and water) , brushline, brush hatch, brush squiggles
Square #3 mix it up
Nib hash marks, brush hash marks, last two, patterns of your choice, experiment and have fun.
In each box, for example, 85%/crosshatch, create a pattern of that type to approximate a tonal value of 85% dark.
Also research three ink artists from list, print out pictures from each and talk about their work.
Due next week in class.
