Ok everyone-
You should all be prepped with photos and sketches for the artwork we are doing for this weeks project. Tomorrow we'll be discussing those projects and your sketches and reference as well as working with the model. We will be focusing on transforming the model and movement and attitude in conjunction with storytelling. Bring in drawing materials and inks with brushes! Try to bring brushes of various sizes, though I really like a teardrop shaped watercolor brush for ink. You can also bring in nib pens and other black making devices.
In the meantime, check out this blog :http://www.linesandcolors.com/
As well, I have a drawing construction demo on this blog...go ahead and check it out!

Fifth Assignment
Fifth Assignment: Classic Composition Final Due: April 11th
Composition from Famous Illustration or Fine Art Image
Using a compositional idea influenced by a narrative painting from a classic illustration(early years up to 1950, or an impressionist era work depicting at least two figures), you will set-up models, environments and props with consistent lighting and establish color themes to produce a comprehensive painting. The gathered information may be compiled from a variety of sources not necessarily existing together.
It will be important to conceive of a new narrative and theme and characters from the original composition. Be creative and have fun with this. You can take a classic piece and turn it into a fantasy, superhero, cartoon piece or whatever you like as long as the basic design principles from the original composition are there.
• Step one: No fewer than a half-dozen sketches will be presented to be reviewed and analyzed in a group critique to narrow possibilities for comps. It will also be incumbent upon you to bring in a reproduction of the piece which you are planning on using as your inspiration. Sketches will be 4”X5” to 8”X10” each, mounted on a single black sheet of board (15”X20”, 20”X30” or 30”X40”).
• Step two: One B&W comp. will be presented with at least two differing color comps. They will all be mounted on a single piece of black board (15”X20”, 20”X30” or 30”X40”) for a group review.
• Step three: Following the ideas and image of the comp., a finished painting in a wet medium (ink,water/color, acrylics, oils, or gouache) between 12”X16” and 30”X40”, will be presented for a group review.
- Purpose – Composition is the key structural element of any narrative illustration. This is where shape and values are united under the intent of the piece to communicate the story of the image. Forms of Eastern composition were employed in the West during the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Era. From the Golden Age of Illustration (1890-1920) to today (See Sam Weber and Yuko Shimuzo), these ideas in composition have had a strong influence on the field of illustration. This assignment introduces these forms and helps in understanding the importance of studying how they’ve been effectively employed and how you can employ the lessons in new and different ways.

Tommorow
We will have a model again and do a lot of drawing in class. Bring wet media( ink, brushes, watercolor) as well as dry(colored pencils)with appropriate paper. We'll be talking about heads, hands and feet and reviewing sketches and color comps.
I'm looking forward to seeing the life drawings in your sketchbooks. Anyone who didn't show me sketchbooks last week should have them ready with all of the work from previous weeks.
